Disposal of Dangerous Wastes (Hazardous Wastes) – General Information

A list including all the different types of dangerous wastes acc. to §41 KRW/-ABFG (Kreislaufwirtschafts- und Abfallgesetz (Act for Promoting Closed Substance Cycle Waste Management and Ensuring Environmentally Compatible Waste Disposal) produced in routine operation in the institutes is available in Summary Dangerous Wastes (Hazardous Wastes). This link lists all important information as to classification, packaging, declaration, marking, disposal, and transport for each type of waste.

The waste producer classifies the dangerous wastes according to the European Waste Catalog (EWC). Each data sheet lists some examples: If these examples are not sufficient for classification, you can consult the ABC of Dangerous Wastes –link. If classification is still not possible, provide a detailed description of the waste composition. In case of old wastes or unlabelled containers, an analysis has to be carried out. The required sample quantity can be inquired by telephone.

All facilities in the Institutsviertel (institute district) deliver their waste in the trough wagons that are supplied as a loan upon request. Our business hours are available in the navigation bar under "The Department introducing itself".

Empty containers are available at the same times, a written order is required.

For the facilities located further away, waste pickup will continue to take place every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month

Irrespective of the type of delivery, the following elementary issues have to be observed for all containers:

  • All containers have to be sealed tightly and marked with a corresponding label and if necessary with the required dangerous substance labels.
  • All containers must be clean on the outside.
  • The containers must be filled up to 90% at the most.
  • All containers are marked with an embossed stamp stating the date of manufacture. The maximum admissible time of use for transportation of hazardous substances is five years. Please do not use containers for disposal that are older than five years.
  • For disposal, please only use containers and accessories from our Catalog of goods (a.k.a. "Warenkatalog")
  • Containers with liquid dangerous wastes must not contain sediments or solids.
  • Solvent wastes with a flash point below 35° must be filled into containers with a maximum nominal capacity of 5 liters. The table listing the properties of the most commonly used solvents– link summarizes the properties and flash point of these liquids. When disposing of mixtures, please always base your evaluation on the lowest flash point. If mixtures of identical composition have to be disposed of more frequently, we can determine the flash point in our laboratory.
  • Always specify the pH-value of all aqueous solutions.
  • For routine disposal, containers with oil wastes and emulsions must not contain PCP and PCB.
